Online courses are extremely informative
and very intimate. The online courses are basically
an open forum from which to learn and interact with
your instructor and fellow classmates. There are required
readings, assignments and tests that must be completed
within a certain time frame. There are also requirements
regarding class participation and class discussions.
These open discourses help to build an academic community
with people from all over the world via the web instead
of the physical classroom.
Laura Pierczynski, age 32: I never thought
that I would have time to go back to school and finish
my education. I had a husband and two children on top
of working a tiring full-time job. I found myself really
enjoying the instruction and the sense of community
I got from being involved in the online class. I use
to think that the web was just good for checking emails,
buying plane tickets and my kids research homework.
I never thought that I could achieve my own educational
goals just as easily. My online course became a part
of my everyday routine and logging into class came natural
to me after a couple of days. I would come home around
6 o’clock, get my family situated with dinner
and check my kid’s homework before being my own.
Instead of curling up with a good book, I would curl
up with my laptop and type away. I enjoyed reading the
posts by the other students, some of them actually coming
from other countries. My instructor was extremely knowledgeable.
We even had a section of the class entitled ‘Cup
of Coffee’ where the students would gather to
further discuss topics and get to know one another.
The online courses that I took really changed my outlook
on life. My husband now refers to me as ‘the smarter
half’ and my kids have a new appreciation of how
good learning can feel.
