Teaching and education degrees prepare you for one of the noblest professions. Ask anyone to name major influences in their life, and more often than not, they'll mention either a parent or a teacher. The educational world is always in need of dedicated and passionate individuals with the ability to inspire and capsulate minds young and old.

School attendance in the United States is compulsory until age 16, making preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary schools a constant source of employment for educators, school guidance counselors, and school administrators. Opportunities exist at public, private, parochial, and boarding schools, as well as military academies. Post-secondary postings at community or junior colleges, career and technical institutes, professional schools, universities, and colleges are also open to qualified teaching professionals. In 2004, there were more than 13 million educational services jobs, making it the second largest industry in the U.S. (Sloan)

Recent government initiatives, like the No Child Left Behind Act, have turned the national spotlight on our school system, making this an excellent time to start preparing for a career in education. As part of the campaign to raise national standards and even out the playing field between rural and urban communities, rich and poor, more federal and state funding is available for schools to attract, recruit, and retain teachers from all walks of life. These "Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants" can lead to higher pay, better benefits, continuing education opportunities, and results-based rewards. (Teacher Quality) Salaries for teachers are expected to increase by 17% over the 2004-14 period. (Sloan)

Beyond the financial incentives available to teachers today, many are drawn to the profession because of the personal satisfaction and enjoyment they get from helping others learn, making a difference in the lives of others, and sharing in the joy of students as they gain new skills and knowledge. Online Schools has many different programs that specialize in spreading knowledge to those willing and ready to receive it. No matter what your background, you can make a difference with a career in education.
